So you're interested in a homestay experience using a rural hilltribe community in northern Thailand? Sounds Great! Just remember, do not be expecting luxury or hotel type accommodations. Be prepared for rather basic accommodations without too much amenities. Most likely your shower will be very rudimentary along with consist of a bucket of cool water in which you empty on yourself, along with your toilet will be the traditional Thai squat toilet, which is usually low to the ground along with does not flush by itself; you'll have to pour a bucket or two of water to admit the toilet to flush. Do not worry; If you have chosen the right homestay, you'll get a very rustic yet clean room using a functional bed. Do not be anticipating gourmet restaurant style food, however meals should be very tasty along with healthyly prepared. The ladies from the village who prepare your meals will most likely be very experienced cooks along with well versed in their own culinary traditions. If you're a vegetarian, they should be able to accommodate you.

Just a tip – if you're staying using a hilltribe community – ie Akha, Hmong, Lisu, Lahu, Karen or Mien , in which could not hurt to do some research in advance on their culture along with history.

While I have no personal experience with in Thailand per se, I had the opportunity to do a site inspection of a relatively fresh homestay from the mountains, about an hour drive by Chiang Mai, the tourist hub of Northern Thailand. Rooms were simple along with modest as expected yet very clean along with had a petite outdoor verandah with chairs in addition to a modest area inside the room to lay your personal belongings.

The villagers grew both tea along with coffee from the immediate vicinity along with many people from the community were engaged in farming along with additional agricultural pursuits. While perusing the merchandise in their community's gift shop, I bought a special neck collar-pillow stuffed with aromatic green tea. For some strange reason, I thought in which US Customs might tear in which apart looking for marijuana yet they did not even bat an eye.
